Coming off of their self-titled 2022 album, MUNA has released a new single, “One That Got Away” on April 17 with an accompanying music video. The band has recently made headlines with the announcement that they would be joining Taylor Swift on her Eras arena tour for several dates over the course of the summer. The band is composed of Katie Gavin (she/her) with lead vocals, Josette Maskin (she/they) on lead guitar, and Naomi McPherson (they/them) on rhythm guitar, synths, and backing vocals.
Their aforementioned self-titled album was released in June 2022 under the indie label Saddest Factory Records, which is housed under Dead Oceans and unlike many of their previous works, it holds tones of self-confidence and self-love. This new single does not shy away from those same themes. Completely written and produced by the band, “One That Got Away” discloses the relationship that never was but with an air of confidence that only comes from knowing that you’re better than the other person. This comes through with Gavin singing, “Baby, ‘cause you lost me/Soon enough you’re gonna see/That I’m the one that got away.” Gavin goes on to state, “If you never put it on the line/How am I gonna sign for it?/You never let me know I’m what you want,” eluding to the idea of a relationship that could have been but was never communicated.
While the track has heavy, meaningful lyrics of a doomed, would-be relationship it still has the band’s signature pop dance beat. So, while you cry about your ex, you can also dance to your heart’s content. MUNA’s “One That Got Away” is available anywhere you listen and the music video is available on YouTube. MUNA will be playing the Palace Theatre in St. Paul on May 17, 2023.
